Monterrei´s wine route

Those who travel the Monterrei Wine Route discovered a different landscape, a path bathed in the colors of wine, enriched by its history, gastronomy and, above all, by the friendly hospitality of its people.

The Monterrei Wine Route is located in a region with great cultural richness, in which monuments such as the Monterrei Castle emerge, the largest acropolis of the community and where the first Galician incunabula was printed, the pre-Romanesque church of Mixós, the church and cloister of La Merced, the Casa de los Acevedo (which hosted a meeting between Felipe el Hermoso and Cardenal Cisneros), the Plaza de José García Barbón (patron and philanthropist of the town) or the Casa del Escudo (dated in the year 1737), among others.

Despite not being a very extensive route in the territory, it hosts a great variety of places worth visiting and remembering. Nature is spectacular, as shown by the Natural Park of Greenhouse (of which the Monterrei region is its gateway), the Cidadella waterfall (Vilardevós), the Pozo do Demo (Verín) or the mineral-medicinal water springs (Cabreiroá , Sousas, Fontenova, Caldeliñas and Fonte do Sapo), which are part of the Thermal and Water Route – European cultural Itinerary. Without forgetting, the passage through the territory of two variants of the Camino de Santiago: the southeast way of the Silver Route and the Portuguese Interior Way.

The succession of valleys and mountains make up a unique landscape in which the traveler can discover the region with the largest number of cave presses in Galicia, learn about the traditional architecture in its towns, and taste its enogastronomy, which in addition to wine and products such as cod or cabrito, pay homage with your Cigarrón cake to the figure of the Entroido de Verín (Festival of National Tourist Interest).

Anyone who visits Monterrei will feel that they are in a different land, with walled enclosures, centuries-old paths, pilgrimage routes, popular architecture, endless mountains, wild nature and, above all, wine, good wine.
